Portability lets you use in WeSpeak the same number your guests already know: the number is transferred from your current carrier (it's not a forward) and becomes just another number in your account.
💡 While the porting is underway, your line keeps working normally with your current carrier.
Step 1 — Verify your number
- Go to Channels → Numbers, Port number tab.
- Type your number (or several, one per line, in local or international format).
- The system instantly checks whether it can be ported and shows you the current carrier it detected. Some numbers also qualify for fast porting (a shorter process, typical in the US and Canada) — you'll see it indicated in the result. Only portable numbers move forward; if one isn't, you'll see the reason.
The verification is just a query: it doesn't start any process or affect your line.
ℹ️ Note: not all numbers are portable — it depends on the country, the number type and your carrier. And the initial verification is indicative: the definitive confirmation comes from your current carrier during the process (that's why the "Action required" status may appear later on).
Step 2 — Complete the request
For your carrier to approve the porting you need:
| Data / document | Detail |
|---|---|
| Account holder details | Exactly as they appear with your current carrier — the No. 1 cause of rejection is data that doesn't match. |
| Service address | The address associated with the line. |
| Scope | Indicate whether you port all the numbers in your account with that carrier or only some. |
| Letter of authorization (LOA) | The panel generates it pre-filled with the request data: you download it with Download template (LOA), sign it and upload it. |
| Recent invoice | An invoice from your carrier from the last 90 days. |
| Desired date (optional) | The final date is confirmed by your carrier. |
Save the data with Save information as you go. The Download template (LOA) button is enabled when the account holder details and address are already saved (the letter is generated with that data). When everything is complete, the Submit request button is enabled — until then, a notice below the button tells you what's missing.
Step 3 — Track the status
The request shows a timeline that updates on its own:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| ⚪ Draft | Data or documents are missing (drafts expire after 30 days). |
| 🔵 Validating request | WeSpeak is validating the request you submitted. |
| 🔵 Sent to your carrier | Your current carrier is reviewing it. |
| 🔴 Action required | Your carrier rejected something (data that doesn't match, an illegible letter). The reason appears in the panel: you correct it and resubmit from the same screen — the request goes back to Sent to your carrier. |
| 🟣 Date confirmed | There's now a porting date. |
| ✅ Ported | The number is now in WeSpeak. |
| 🟠 Cancellation in progress | You requested to cancel and your carrier is processing it. |
| ⚫ Canceled | The porting was canceled; the number stays with your carrier (you can start a new one whenever you want). |
When it's Ported, the number appears in My numbers: connect it to the Calls channel and assign users, just like with a purchased number.
Timelines and details to know
- Porting isn't instant: it depends on your carrier and your country — from a few days to several weeks.
- You can cancel the porting while it's underway.
- The voice line is ported: if the number sent SMS with your carrier, those messages don't transfer.
- Your request may be split into several: if you port numbers from different countries or types, the process is separated into independent requests — each with its own timeline and its own documentation. You see them all in the Port number tab.
- Additional verification steps: some countries or carriers require extra steps (for example, a verification code). In that case the panel indicates it, the submission is blocked and the WeSpeak support team completes that step with you.
- The ported number arrives "loose": it appears in My numbers active but not connected to any channel — connecting it to Calls and assigning users is a manual step on your part.
Frequently asked questions
Do I lose calls during the process?
No: your line stays active with your current carrier until the porting day.
My request was rejected, what do I do?
Read the reason in the panel notice (almost always account holder details that don't match your carrier or an illegible letter), correct it and resubmit from the same screen.
Can I choose the exact day of the switch?
You can request a desired date, but the final date is confirmed by your current carrier.
Is my number portable? Does it depend on the number type?
There's no rule by type: landline, mobile and toll-free numbers are ported — what decides is the country and your current carrier, number by number. That's why Step 1 exists: type your number and the verification tells you instantly whether it can be ported and which carrier it's with. Keep in mind that outside the US/Canada that first answer is indicative: the final word rests with your carrier during the process.
